Devon Young Carers

Supporting an incredible community of young people aged 4-17 across the county. Every Young Carer deserves to be seen, heard and supported.

Over the summer, we were thrilled to take two groups of young carers on two unforgettable days of coasteering at the stunning Fishcombe Cove, Brixham. These action-packed adventure days were all about fun, friendship, and overcoming fears, and they gave our young carers aged 8–12 and 13–17 the chance to try something completely new.

Fishcombe Cove is a hidden gem, a beautiful, small shingle and sand beach on the edge of Brixham. Surrounded by woodland cliffs, it’s a peaceful, sheltered spot that’s also an important habitat for native seahorses, thanks to its precious eelgrass beds. It was the perfect setting for our adventure!

Setting Off for Adventure

Our journey began bright and early at Newton Abbot Sainsbury’s, where we met up and hopped on the minibus. We made a quick stop in Totnes to collect the rest of our group before heading down to Brixham.

On arrival, we were warmly welcomed by Nicky and Stuart from Life on the Edge (National Landscapes) and met our incredible coasteering instructors from Reach Outdoors. After some introductions and icebreakers, it was time to get kitted up in wetsuits, helmets, and life jackets.

With a safety briefing complete, we made our way down the steep path to the cove, ready to take on the water.

Taking the Plunge

The morning began with learning techniques to safely enter the water and get comfortable in our PPE. Once everyone was ready, we swam out as a group, led by our instructors, to the rocky crags where the real adventure began!

The coasteering challenges included jumping from different heights, all based on a “Challenge by Choice” approach. This meant every young carer could work to their own comfort level, building confidence step by step.

It was inspiring to see each young person supported and encouraged by the instructors, who tailored the activities to suit the group’s individual needs. Many overcame their fears and pushed themselves further than they ever imagined.

By the end of the session, there were big smiles all around, and a huge sense of pride in what we’d all achieved together.

Picnics, Nature Trails & Reflection

After a busy and exciting morning, we dried off and changed into warm clothes before enjoying a picnic in the sunshine at Battery Gardens.

The afternoon brought a quieter pace as we reflected on our achievements and set off on a nature trail, exploring the area’s beautiful surroundings. Along the way, we learned about the local coastline’s wildlife and even visited shelters once used by the Brixham Home Guard during WWII, a fascinating glimpse into the past.

Finally, we headed back to Newton Abbot (via Totnes), tired but happy, with memories that will last a lifetime.

What Our Young Carers Had to Say.

Hearing how the experience impacted our young carers was the highlight of all:

Arthur: I felt amazing and extraordinarily refreshed.

Daniel: I found it fun and exciting.

Zella: Once I started doing it, it was really fun and I loved it.

Amelia: I felt cool once I started doing it. I felt upset in a good way after because I didn’t want to get out of the water. I feel proud of myself.

These quotes perfectly capture the spirit of the day: fun, bravery, and the joy of trying something new.
