Our Devon Young Carers recently spent a fun-filled day at Wildside in the Blackdown Hills, where they enjoyed a wonderful mix of nature, adventure, laughter, and new experiences.

After setting off from Exeter in the Westbank minibus, driven by our lovely volunteer driver, Ray, the excitement was already building. For some, it was their first trip with us, and by the time we arrived, smiles were already spreading through the group.

A Warm Welcome and Toasty Start

When we arrived at Wildside, we were warmly greeted by Richard and Allison, who welcomed us with a crackling campfire. The young carers gathered around the fire to toast marshmallows and make s’mores, and for many, it was their first time ever making one! The joy on their faces said it all.

Once everyone was warmed up, the group joined in a fun name game with a toy sword, sparking laughter and helping everyone get to know each other better.

Meeting the Animals

Next, it was time to feed the sheep and chickens. There was plenty of excitement (and a few nervous giggles), especially from one young carer who admitted she was scared of sheep, but by the end, she had bravely fed two of them and did a fantastic job!

Woodland Adventures and Play

After the animals were fed, the group headed into the woods for some lively hide-and-seek tag. Split into two teams, the woods came alive with laughter, running, and happy chaos, as everyone took turns being chased and doing the chasing. It was impossible not to giggle!

A Delicious Lunch in the Barn

All that activity worked up quite an appetite, so everyone gathered in the barn for a delicious lunch of sausages and rolls, made with Wildside’s very own pigs, along with fresh vegetables, watermelon, and homemade biscuits. It was the perfect way to refuel before the afternoon’s adventures.

Ponies, Zipline Fun, and Big Smiles

After lunch, the group got the chance to walk and groom the ponies, which quickly became a highlight of the day. One young carer said,

“I love the ponies so much, I want to bring them home with me! If you lose me, this is where I’ll be.”

To end the day, everyone took turns on the woodland zipline, and the cheers, clapping, and laughter could be heard all around. One young carer shared that they were sad the day was ending because they’d had such a wonderful time.

Reflecting on a Wonderful Day

Before heading home, everyone gathered back in the barn to share their “best bits” of the day. One young carer said their favourite part was “meeting new people and chatting to them”, a lovely reminder of how important days like these are for connection, confidence, and friendship.

The day at Wildside was filled with joy, laughter, courage, and new memories, and we’re so grateful to Richard, Allison, and Ray for making it all possible.
