Be a Ranger for a Day with Devon Young Carers

At the end of October, a group of Devon Young Carers from North Devon were given a wonderful opportunity to “Be a Ranger for a Day” with the National Trust, a special experience generously offered free of charge.

The day was all about taking a break, spending time outdoors, and discovering what it’s like to be a countryside ranger, learning first-hand about caring for nature, wildlife, and the environment.

Setting off for an Exmoor Adventure

Amanda and Fiona from our North Devon team met 13 Young Carers bright and early in Barnstaple, ready to head off on a day of adventure and discovery. For many of the children, this was their first-ever trip with Devon Young Carers, and although there were a few nerves on the minibus journey, it was lovely to see new friendships beginning to form as we travelled to Kipscombe on Exmoor.

A Warm Welcome from the Rangers

On arrival, the group were warmly greeted by Meia and Amy, two of the National Trust’s dedicated rangers. We started the day upstairs in the main room, a cosy base where the group could warm up, learn about the plans for the day, and get inspired about what being a ranger really means.

Meia and Amy explained the important work that rangers do to protect and preserve local wildlife, woodlands, and nature trails. The children listened with curiosity and excitement, eager to get stuck into the hands-on activities ahead.

Learning, Exploring, and Toasting Marshmallows

Throughout the day, our young carers enjoyed a mix of fun and educational activities. They explored the area on a nature scavenger hunt, learned about local plants and animals, and discovered how even small actions can make a big difference in protecting the natural world.

Of course, no outdoor adventure is complete without a campfire! The group loved toasting marshmallows and making tasty s’mores, with lots of laughter and sticky fingers all round.

Friendship, Laughter, and Lasting Memories

By the end of the day, the bus was filled with smiles, stories, and new friendships. For some, it was their first time experiencing Exmoor; for others, it was a chance to reconnect with nature and simply enjoy being outside together.

The Be a Ranger Day offered our young carers a precious chance to relax, have fun, and build confidence, a well-earned break from their day-to-day caring responsibilities.

A Huge Thank You

We’d like to say a huge thank you to Amy and Meia from the National Trust for creating such a memorable and meaningful day for our young carers. Your warmth, kindness, and enthusiasm made the experience very special.

The day reminded us how powerful time in nature can be, not just for learning, but for wellbeing, connection, and, of course fun!
