Be observant of the young person.

There are often recognisable signs before Young Carers are identified. This could include being frequently late, recurring absences, anxiety and low attainment. 

Listen and allow them time to speak freely.

Be available for them. Many young people want to feel heard. Creating a safe space will make it easier for young people to talk about what's going on at home

Remember, they are the experts in their own lives! Don’t make assumptions. 

Many young carers go unrecognised because they don’t see their situation as unusual compared to their peers or are afraid to speak up. 

Some young carers may feel shame or fear around their caring role.

 Show compassion and understanding. 

Acknowledge their caring role.

By validating their experiences, it will help them to feel seen and respected. 

They won't expect you to fix or change everything.

Listen to what life is like for them. Some young carers may not want further support, but just their role to be acknowledged. Others may want additional support.  

Ask them what support they would find most helpful at this time. 

Evaluate if there are any barriers which are stopping this young person from meeting their full potential.

Look at what support can be put in place?  

Consider the emotional, social, educational and physical impact on the young person. 

Remember, young carers often have added responsibilities in their lives; they may need some support to access resources you provide.  

Offer regular check-ins: Especially in schools or youth programs.
