Wendy has been volunteering for Westbank for over 8 years, and throughout that time, her commitment, warmth, and expertise have made a significant and lasting impact on both our social activities and groups, delivered from our Community Hub, as well as in our Community Cookery School, where she supports the delivery of cookery workshops.

A truly valued and reliable member of our volunteer team, Wendy consistently goes above and beyond, often volunteering multiple times a week across various Community Cookery School sessions. Her flexibility and enthusiasm mean she is always ready to lend a hand.

In the Community Cookery School, Wendy has been instrumental in supporting a wide range of groups, including family cooking classes, young carers’ cooking sessions, and our much-loved cook-and-lunch groups. Her deep knowledge and experience as a former food technology teacher shine through in every session she supports. Wendy shares her skills with patience, kindness, and a clear passion for helping others learn and grow in the kitchen.

Her friendly and approachable nature makes her a joy to work with. Participants and fellow volunteers alike appreciate Wendy’s warm personality, positive attitude, and the calm, reassuring presence she brings to every session. When needed, Wendy has also confidently stepped into a leadership role, running sessions herself - demonstrating both initiative and true dedication to the community.

Wendy also supports the regular Ladies Hobbies and Afternoon Tea social group, which takes place in the Community Hub, and supports a group of ladies, many of whom are elderly, isolated or disabled. She is a friendly, welcoming face, for many who see few others each week. Wendy is happy to get stuck in wherever she’s needed, helping to run the weekly quiz, washing up, or sitting and chatting with those who need it.

Wendy says of her volunteering role, “I became a volunteer at Westbank eight years ago because I was retired, new to Exminster village and knew no one here. I was drawn to the Hobbies and Pastimes activity because of my background in teaching Food and Textiles.  The formulation of the Community Cookery School then enabled me to share my skills and watch others gain in confidence and enjoyment of cooking.  It has been good to be part of the Westbank Community and their inclusive vibe”.
