Volunteer Roles Our staff are supported by an army of volunteers spread right across the county, they are the beating heart of our charity, connecting us to Devon’s rural and urban communities. There are a variety of service areas that have volunteering opportunities at Westbank Community Health and Care. You can find information about all the roles below. Not all opportunities are available all the time, you can search and apply for available roles here. If you see a role here that is not currently available, please keep an eye on the website for updates or you can register an interest and we’ll contact you with information about when the services you are interested in start to recruit again. Community Transport Driver Become a volunteer driver for Westbank! Not everyone has access to a car or a friendly face to help them get to appointments or social activities. As a volunteer driver for Westbank, you can make a real difference in your community in many ways. You could be helping patients who don’t qualify for hospital transport services and have no one else to take them home, supporting local residents of Exminster and Starcross in getting to their medical appointments, or providing rides to and from social groups and activities organised by Westbank. Additionally, you might deliver accessibility equipment, move furniture for hospital beds, or do a food shop for someone returning from the hospital. Our driver roles are incredibly flexible, with no set time commitment required. You can volunteer as much or as little as fits your schedule. Join us and help make a difference, one ride at a time! Play Volunteer Do you enjoy working with children and want to be part of a fun, dynamic environment? We're looking for enthusiastic volunteers to join Kidzone, Westbank’s OFSTED registered childcare setting, offering pre-school, after-school, and holiday care at our Healthy Living Centre in Exminster. As a volunteer, you can engage in a variety of activities, from leading or supporting exciting games and crafts, to helping older children with their homework in the after-school club, or joining in on song and story times. Our doors are open from 8:30am to 6:00pm, Monday to Friday, and we appreciate support at any time during these hours. Get involved and make a positive impact on children's lives! For more info see Kidzone - Westbank Community Cafe Assistant Are you friendly, welcoming, and love engaging with people? Westbank's community café, Coffee on the Corner, in Exminster, is looking for new volunteers to help run the café. As a volunteer, you'll be making coffees (with training provided), serving food and drinks, chatting with customers, and helping with cleaning. If you enjoy interacting with the public and want to support an important community project, this could be the perfect role for you! We are seeking enthusiastic volunteers to join our team and support on our reception desk at the Healthy Living Centre in Exminster. This is a fantastic opportunity to enhance your skills, meet new people, and make a real difference in our community. As a reception volunteer, you'll be the friendly face that welcomes visitors, assists with enquiries, and ensures a smooth and welcoming experience for everyone. If you have a passion for providing excellent customer service, this role is for you! In addition to the reception desk, we also have a range of administration roles available for those who enjoy back-office tasks. Our goal is to create a welcoming and safe space where people can meet, interact, and build lasting friendships. We are on the lookout for enthusiastic volunteers of all ages and skill sets to assist in delivering these groups or to start new ones. Whether it's supporting unpaid carers, engaging older adults, or creating a space for people to develop new friendships and skills, your contribution can make a significant impact. Join us in supporting our communities to come together! Community Kitchen Supporter Do you want to help our kitchen team provide meals for your local community? You don’t need previous cooking experience, just the desire to roll up your sleeves and get involved. We are looking for committed, practical volunteers to support in the kitchen at Westbank's Healthy Living Centre in Exminster. Your contribution will help us deliver meals to regular social groups, which provide companionship and enjoyment for those who may otherwise experience isolation and loneliness. You can be involved in the kitchen in many ways, from preparing fresh ingredients for nutritious meals to assisting with cleaning and ensuring our kitchen runs smoothly. We are looking for support on Tuesday mornings and every other Thursday, from 9am-1pm. Join us in supporting the community, one meal at a time! Hospitality Volunteer Do you have a knack for making people feel welcome? Are you friendly and organised? As a Hospitality Volunteer, you'll have the opportunity to greet and assist conference guests at Westbank's Healthy Living Centre in Exminster, set up rooms for sessions, arrange our refreshments, and help with clean-up to ensure everything runs smoothly. This role offers hands-on experience in event management, the chance to meet new and interesting people, and the satisfaction of knowing you helped create a memorable experience for our attendees. The role can be flexible, with support being required at a variety of times and days according to our bookings. Support us and ensure a great experience for all our guests! Health and Wellbeing Volunteer Are you passionate about health and would love to support others to reach their wellness goals? As a Health and Wellbeing Volunteer at Westbank you may be assisting members to access the equipment in our gym – including our accessible equipment for those with disabilities, supporting participants in our exercise referral or falls prevention sessions or providing other support in the gym. You'll gain valuable experience in a supportive environment, share your knowledge and skills and make a positive impact on people's lives. If you're friendly, motivated, and eager to learn, we want you on our team! Help us create a healthier community for all! Grounds Maintenance Do you love being outside and want a role that will help keep you fit and healthy? We are looking for volunteers who can play a crucial role in keeping our outdoor spaces beautiful and well-maintained. As a Grounds Maintenance Volunteer, based at the Healthy Living Centre in Exminster, you'll help with a variety of tasks including weeding, planting, strimming and general upkeep of our grounds. This is your chance to work outdoors, gain valuable hands-on experience, and see the tangible results of your efforts. Community Cookery School Volunteer Do you love cooking and would enjoy sharing your skills with others? Westbank's Healthy Living Centre in Exminster boasts an incredible purpose-built teaching kitchen where we host practical cookery sessions for a wide range of people from our local communities. We are seeking enthusiastic volunteers! Whether you're keen to lead cooking sessions or prefer to provide one-to-one support to our learners, we have a place for you. Share your love of cooking, help others develop their culinary skills, and make a positive impact in your community! Want to make a difference in your community? We're looking for enthusiastic volunteers to help us cultivate our community allotment, located behind Westbank's Healthy Living Centre in Exminster. Whether you're an experienced gardener or just eager to learn, your green fingers can help us grow a thriving, sustainable garden for everyone to enjoy. You will be helping to produce food which will go to those who need it most, via our community larders, teaching kitchen and social groups. Join us in planting, weeding, and harvesting, all while making new friends and contributing to a greener future. Come share your skills and help our community blossom! Walk Leader Do you love walking and want to be part of your local community? We're looking for volunteers to lead our Health Walks in various locations across East and Mid Devon. Our walks cater to people of all ages and abilities, encouraging everyone to stay active, improve their fitness, and make new friends. As a walk leader, you'll welcome and register both new and regular walkers, ensuring everyone feels comfortable during the walks and at our tea breaks in local cafes or community centres. You might also enjoy planning new routes or conducting risk assessments. Plus, you'll have the chance to connect with other walk leaders at regular meetings and social events. Did you know 63% of unpaid carers never have a break from their caring role? We welcome volunteers who can give their time to sit with somebody whilst their carer has a break. What does Time For You Sitting Service involve? Volunteers to sit for 1 - 3 hours, in the carer’s home, interacting with the person they care for. Enjoy conversation over a cuppa and see what difference your help can make. You will not be expected to prepare any meals or help with personal care. When would I be needed? Time For You is provided Mon-Fri 9:00am – 4:30pm. If you are interested in making a difference to carers, please see more information here: Time For You sitting service - Devon Carers Telephone Support for Unpaid Carers Would you like to help unpaid carers from the comfort of your own home? What does Telephone Support involve? Volunteers can make regular telephone calls for a short period of time with specific carers, acting as a listening ear, helping them to achieve goals or finding befriending services. You will be trained and supported to undertake this valuable role, making a real difference to carers in Devon. It is not a counselling service. How much time would I be expected to give? Ideally you would be available for half an hour a week, or more, if you have the time. The service runs from Mon-Fri 9:00am – 4:30pm.
