Meet other local people at our baby weaning workshop, aimed at parents/carers of babies aged 3-9 months (soon to start weaning / fairly recently started weaning)*.

Join us for a series of two workshops designed to provide you with everything you need to know to start weaning your baby. Sessions include a lesson, learning the basics, followed by a cookery session making purees and finger foods.

This workshop is run by Westbank's qualified Nutritionist, Emma (BSc RNutr, registered with the Association for Nutrition www.associationfornutrition.org/).

Each workshop is for a maximum of 8 people to allow for discussion, questions and cooking.

Topics covered include:

  • When to start weaning
  • Weaning equipment
  • Spoon-fed vs. baby-led weaning
  • First foods
  • Milk intakes
  • How to introduce foods most likely to cause an allergic reaction
  • Texture progression and how to offer finger foods safely. Gagging vs. choking.
  • Foods to avoid.
  • Key nutrients for your baby and supplements.
  • Baby convenience foods and reading food labels.
  • Good store cupboard ingredients and time-saving ideas.
  • Food refusal.
  • Balanced meals.
  • Drinks.
  • Q&A.

Pricing: £40 for two morning workshops.  All ingredients are provided.

Week 1
The Basics

Chat and learn the basics with our nutritionist.

Week 2
Get Cooking

Make purees & finger foods in our Cookery Schools.

This is a paid workshop (£40 for both sessions), which helps us cover our costs. If you'd like to come but the price is a barrier, please contact reception on 01392 824752. We want everyone to feel welcome.

Recipes are subject to change each week depending on ingredient availability.

Recipes include allergens (e.g. cows milk, egg, wheat). Westbank Community Cookery School also uses all other allergens. If you / your baby/someone you are cooking for has an allergy, please let us know in advance. You could use alternative ingredients; however, because the Community Cookery School kitchen uses allergens, there is a risk of cross-contamination.

Resources are available to take home, and books are available for hire, including topics such as weaning, nutrition, recipes, and children’s books on the topic of food.

Babies and other children are very welcome to join (1 baby/child per adult). Please contact Emma in advance if you would like to bring more than one baby/child, and we will do what we can to accommodate. During the sessions, you will be responsible for any babies / children you bring with you. During the cookery session, for safety reasons, please bring a pram or pushchair for your baby/child to be in at the side of your cooking station. Alternatively, we have a few highchairs that can be borrowed – if you would like to borrow one, please let us know in advance so we can ensure we have enough ready.

* NHS advice is to that ‘Introducing your baby to solid foods, also referred to as weaning or complementary feeding, starts when your baby is around 6 months old’. More information on when to start weaning and signs of readiness is covered in the workshop or see the NHS website for information on this (https://www.nhs.uk/start-for-life/baby/weaning/)”.
